George, Mary

Mary Adella George, 97, of Eureka, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2008, at Medicalodge of Eureka.

She was born on Oct. 24, 1910, at Stratton, Colo., the daughter of Charlie and Maude Vanetta Lang. Her father was a traveling blacksmith. During her childhood, she traveled with her family throughout Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas. She went to school in Cottonwood Falls in the early 1920�s and worked at the hotel after school.

On Dec. 28, 1929, she married Thomas E. George, Sr. at El Dorado. The couple traveled with his job. In 1946, the family settled at Neal, where they stayed until moving to Eureka in the early 1960s. Mary was a member of the Neal Methodist Church and was a homemaker.

She is survived by two sons, Frank George of Cottonwood Falls and Thomas George, Jr., of Toronto; two daughters, Vessie Gulick, Eureka and Margaret Wyer of Windom; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and four step great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter, Grace Williams, three grandsons, four brothers; and two sisters.

Funeral services were held Jan. 28 at Koup Family Funeral Home with Pastor Alan Hunter of the Jefferson Street Baptist Church officiating. Interment followed in the Neal Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in her name to the Medicalodge Activity and Christmas Fund, sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045.
