Gowen, Dorothy K Braucher

Dorothy K Gowen, 86, of Madison, died Feb 1, 2002 at the Madison Manor Nursing Home. Dorothy Gowen graduated from Emporia State Teachers College and taught in rural schools in Lyon and Greenwood counties. Then, in 1968, became a licensed practical nurse and worked at Newman Hospital until she retired in 1982.

Dorothy Braucher, the daughter of James F and Lilly M. Hines Braucher, was born April 12, 1915, in Madison. She married Orval James Louis Gowen on April 27, 1941, in Emporia. He died in 1969. Mrs Gowen was a member of the Central Christian Church in Madison and the Central Christian Ladies Fellowship Circle.

She is survived by two sons, Richard Gowen, Cottonwood Falls, and Charles Gowen of Hartford; three daughters, Barbara Lay of Wichita, Shirley Dreyer of Emporia and Mary Meyer of Madison; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A brother, Lewis Braucher; two sisters, Margaret Brice and Helen Simpson; a grandson and a great-granddaughter died earlier. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was Sunday at the Central Church in Madison. The Rev. Vernon Clark officiated. Memorial contributions to the Madison Educational Assistance Fund or Central Christian Church can be sent to the Wilson Funeral Home, P O Box 488, Madison, Kan. 66860.
