Hammer, Jane Beatrice

Native Emporian Jane Beatrice Hammer, 98, died Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at the Holiday Resort, in Emporia.

Jane Beatrice Roe, the daughter of Charles Foster and Ida Martha Tipton Roe, was born March 5, 1908, at Emporia. She graduated from Emporia High School and attended Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia.

She married Reuben Earnest Hammer in 1927 at Cottonwood Falls. He died in 1973.

Mrs. Hammer was a co-owner of the Neosho Valley Nursery before she retired in 1963. After her husband's death, Mrs. Hammer accepted the offer to serve out his unexpired term as mayor and city commissioner in 1973 and 1974.

Mrs. Hammer was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy. She worked with many community organizations, helped start the Emporia Christian School and served on the Governor's Committee to help develop the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and one of the founders of the Flora Lore Garden Club.

She is survived by one daughter, Marjorie L. Anderson of Plano, Texas; one granddaughter; and three great-grandchildren. A brother, Lewis T. Roe, died earlier.

The funeral service was Monday, March 27, in Charter Funerals-Emporia Chapel. The Rev. Leonard Wagner conducted the service. Burial was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve may be sent to the funeral home, 501 W. Sixth Ave., Emporia, KS 66801.
