Hawkins, Alfred
NEAR CENTENNARIAN IS TAKEN IN DEATH
With the passing Friday , Sept. 12th, of Alfred Hawkins, Cottonwood Falls, in the Chase County Nursing Center, Chase County lost one of its oldest natives and lifetime residents. He was 99 and had maintained his own home until moving to the Center in November 1970.
Born Sept. 6, 1876, at Clements, he was the son of Isaac Richard and Mary Anna Patton Hawkins. He was married to Josie M. Ballew on Sept. 6, 1904, at Clements. They had farmed for many years north of Strong City and south of Cottonwood Falls before moving to Cottonwood Falls in 1945. Mrs. Hawkins died Feb. 4, 1956. Mr. Hawkins was a member of the United Methodist Church, Cottonwood Falls.
Surviving him are one brother, Rev. Sidney Hawkins, Mabank, Tex.; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two sisters, Alta and Estella, and three brothers, Ralph, Roy and Fred Hawkins.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Brown-Bennett Funeral Home here. The Rev. Lee M. Wiersma, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiated. Mrs. Robert Long sang, accompanied by Mrs. Lee Collinsworth. Casket bearers were Charles Gillespie, Robert Giger, Carvel Oldham, Ted White, Wayne Ballew and Don Evans. Burial was in Prairie Grove Cemetery.
Attending the rites from out of town were Helen Gibson and Wayne Ballew, Emporia.
