Hinkle, Vernon W "Vern"
Vernon W Hinkle, 70, died May 18, 2003, at home due to cancer.
He was born Nov. 16, 1932, at Wichita to Fred and Jessie Hinkle. During his early youth his parents settled in Cottonwood Falls.
After high school he served in the military and with the peace keeping forces in Korea. In 1960 he earned his Civil Engineering degree from the University of Kansas and joined Caterpillar Tractor Co., in Peoria, Ill. The company sent him to their international headquarters in Geneva Switzerland and while there he met his wife to be, Hanni. They were married
in Switzerland in July of 1963 and moved to Pakistan. They eventually moved back home and started Idaho Sand & Gravel, a construction/
paving business.
He sold the business in 1988 and tried retirement. Needing another entrepreneurial challenge he started Whirlygig Company, which kept him occupied for the past five years.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, Derek, Terry and Sven; two grandsons; two sisters Betty Brown and Judy Budihas; two uncles; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
