Chase County Kansas Obituaries

1863 - 2002

HixWMC

Another of the real characters of Chase county passed on to his reward, Thursday, when W. M. C. Hix of Matfield Green died. Mr. Hix Was a picturesque character. Although he was above 90 years old he always stood and walked erect and in his eye was the fire of a young man.

Mr. Hix was born in North Carolina, June 14, 1830 which would have made him 93 years next June. He was a typical southern gentleman in bearing end manner, and there always clung to him some of the southern accent in his talk.

Mr. Hix moved to Illinois in his boyhood and it was from that state that he enlisted in the army during the civil war. About sixty-five years ago also in Illinois he married Miss Martha Johnson and during all these years they have travelled the road of life together.

Mr. and Mrs. Hix and their family moved to Kansas about fiftyfive years ago, settling at Augusta where they lived until March, 1893, when they moved to Matfieid Green.

Mr. and Mr. Hix had nine children, three of whom, with Mrs. Hix, remain to mourn for the father: The living children are Mrs. Levi Jones of Matfield Green, Robert Hix and Richard Hix both of El Dorado.

Mr. Hix died at his home at Matfield Green, Thursday February, and the funeral will be held Sunday, February 4th.
