Strong City man
dies in murder
suicide.
A 36-year-old Strong City
man, Tom Loff Jr., pulled out a
gun and killed himself when
police approached him in a
motel parking lot in Emporia
on Friday, Dec. 13, said
Emporia Police Deputy chief
Mike Williams. Emporia police responded to
a call at 2:28 a.m. Friday
morning reporting a shooting
at the Best Western
Hospitality House.
When they arrived they
found Billy J. Cunningham,
29, in a room with multiple
gunshot wounds, said
Williams. Cunningham was
taken by ambulance to
Newman Regional Health,
where he died. Loff, in the
motel parking lot, killed himself as officers approached.
Williams said following the
day's investigation on Friday
that they had uncovered "zero
motive" for what the authorities were calling a murder-suicide. Loff and his family moved to
Strong City from Emporia
early in 2002, said neighbors.
He worked in the shipping and
receiving department at
Fanestil Packing Co. His wife and two children
remain in Strong City.
Cunningham lived in Kechi,
according to police, but had
lived in Emporia until about
four years ago. According to friends,
Cunningham had returned to
their Madison home from his
job in Wichita Thursday
evening and had gone to
Emporia for the night. According to Debbie Rose,
Cunningham went to Emporia
Thursday to meet an old girlfriend.
