Marriott, Caroline On May 30th, 1895, at the residence of her son, John Marriott, Powhattan, Kansas, Mrs. Caroline Marriott passed away after a short illness in the 74th year of her age.
She was born in Leichestershire, England, Jan 21, 1821 and was married to John Marriott in 1838. She was the mother of twelve children, six of whom survive her, John Marriott of Powhattan, Mrs. Mary A Smith of Strong City, Kansas, Mrs. S M Davidson of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Mrs Carrie Summers, of Maitland, Missouri, and
George Marriott, of Caldwell, Kansas.
The family moved to Canada in 1854 and to Osage County, Kansas in January, 1870. In 1875 the family moved to Safford, where the husband and father died Sept 5, 1877. Since his death she has made her home with her children most of the time with her daughter, Mrs. S M Davidson, of Strong City, Kansas. In the fall of 1898, Mrs. Davidson moved to Lake Charles, Louisiana and her mother then went to live with her son John at Powhattan.
A year ago she was attached with la grippe, and her children were all summoned to her bedside., thinking that she would not recover. She gradually grew better, but never entirely recovered. On Saturday, May 25th, she was taken very ill and the children were again called to see her. They arrived to late to see her alive.
The funeral services were held in the Congregational Church at Powhattan at 2:30 PM June 1st 1895, the Rev. Bixby, paster of the Congregational church officiating, after which the remains were interred in the High Prairie cemetery at Powhattan.
The deceased was well known in Chase and Marion counties and her life was one of self sacrifice for others. She lived her religion and was ever ready with loving deeds and helping hands to help those with whom she was associated. "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord."
