McCabe, Bernard

Barney McCabe, who was laid to rest in the Bazaar cemetery Thanksgiving day, was born in Ireland, about eighty-six years ago.

He came to this country when yet a boy and lived for several years in New York. He came to this county in 1858 and settled on the farm just west of the Bazaar school house where he spent the remainder of his life.

About forty years ago he married Miss Jane Wisel who, with their five children, Mrs. Etta Vestring, Miss Sadie McCabe and Miss Julia McCabe of Wichita and Messrs. Tom McCabe and Janice McCabe of Bazaar, survive him.

Mr. McCabe was a hard worker, economical, and a man of good judgment and was blessed with the abundance which is the natural result of those qualities. When the Chase County National Bank was organized in the early 80's Mr. McCabe was one of the stockholders and was chosen one of the directors, in which capacity he served until III health compelled him to retire, but he still held his stock and always took a keen interest in the bank's affairs.

Mr. McCabe was one of the first men that the editor of this paper knew when a little boy and we shall never forget the hearty greeting he always had for a friend or neighbor. Whenever sickness or misfortune came to one of his friends or neighbors, Barney McCabe was ever ready to assist with his time and his means. He was one of the men that made Kansas and he did his part well.

Mr. McCabe died Tuesday and was laid to rest in the Bazaar cemetery Thursday afternoon. Funeral services were held at the McCabe home and were conducted by Father McGuire of the Catholic church Strong City. Our sympathy is with the bereaved wife and children.
