McDonald, Maria

Mrs. Maria McDonald, mother of Matt and George, died suddenly last Monday afternoon of hemorrhage at her residence, in Strong City.

The deceased was born August 15, 1831. She was a woman of wonderful energy, until a year or so ago, when she began to fail. She came to Chase county with her husband and children in 1857, but returned to Cincinnati in 1858. Her husband, Maj. McDonald, was killed at the battle of Franklin, having served in the Union army during the entire war.

Mrs. McDonald returned to Kansas with her young family in 1866, and located on Diamond creek, where she resided until about 10 years ago, when she moved to Strong City.

A few hours previous to her death while at her son Matt's home; she expressed herself as feeling better than usual. She started to return to her owe home and when near the gate she fell, Matt was summoned and he carried her into her house, where she died a few moments after.

The funeral took place at 10 a. m. yesterday. The services were conducted by Father Anthony, at the Catholic church. The sons have the heartfelt sympathy of a Iarge circle of friends in the loss of their mother. The funeral cortege was unusually large.
