Merritt, Samuel A Samuel A. Merritt was born Feb. 15th, 1855, at Prestensburg, Ky., where he spent the early part of his life. When twenty-one years of age he was united in marriage to Miss Polly Ann Ross and to this union eight children were born.
In November of 1887 the Merritt family moved to Chase county and this place remained their home with the exception of a brief residence in Colorado until his death.
Mr. Merritt was a man who looked upon the bright side of life, To knew him was to be his friend and his jovial, optimistic disposition was a outstanding characteristic.
Besides his widow the children who survive are: Mrs. Tenna Sill of Pueblo, Colo.; Miss Nancy and Tom Merritt of Emporia; Ephriam Merritt of Florence, Colo.; Floyd Merritt or Denver, Colo.; Isaac Merritt of Chanute, Kansas; Mrs. Hattie Hager of Emporia; and Robert Merritt of Kansas City, Mo.
Mr. Merritt's death came following an illness of several years. The funeral service was held in the Methodist Church in this city, Saturday afternoon, the Rev. L. R. South pastor of the church preaching the sermon. Interment was then made in the Prairie Grove Cemetery west of the city. The deceased was a member of the Methodist church and was also a member of the Knights and Ladies of Security.

Sam Merritt died at his home southeast of this city, Thursday morning, July 22nd. His death was hastened by a paralytic stroke he suffered two weeks ago, although his illness dates over a period of almost four years.
For more than six months he had been a helpless invalid and his condition had continued to grow worse.
Arrangements for the funeral have not been made but it is likely that it will be Saturday afternoon.
Mr. Merritt had been a resident of Kansas for the past thirty-nine years and nearly all of this time was spent in Chase county. He was 71 years of age at the time of his death and, besides his wife, leaves eight children the most of whom will be here for the funeral.
The children are Ephriam Merritt of Florence, Colo.; Mrs. Tenna Sill of Pueblo, Colo.; Floyd Merritt of Denver; Bob Merritt of Kansas City,
Kansas; Miss Nancy Merritt, Tom Merritt and Mrs. Hattie Hager of Emporia, and Isaac Merritt of Chanute, Kansas.
