Nurnberg, Carl R

Carl R. Nurnberg, 90, died Friday, Aug. 5, 2005, at his home in rural Chase County.

Carl R. Nurnberg, the son of John "Louie" and Anna Marie Bronner Nurnberg, was born Aug. 18, 1914, at the family home in rural Chase County.

He married Dorothy H. VanGundy on Oct. 27, 1944, in Emporia. She survives.

He was a farmer/rancher all of his life. He was a member of the Saffordville United Methodist Church. He was active in many agricultural organizations including the Federal Land Bank, Chase County Soil Conservation District and Kansas Livestock Association. He received the Conservation Award in 1953 and served on the Soil Conservation Board from 1956 until 1977. In 1984, he received the Outstanding Conservation Farmer Award.

He is survived by his wife, of the home; three sons, Daniel Nurnberg and Howard Nurnberg both of Emporia, and Thomas Nurnberg of Port Byron, Ill.; four daughters, Leila Merry of Olpe, Marilyn Voorhees of Waverly, Arlene Dodge of Emporia and Charlene Palenske of Strong City; one brother Roy E. Nurnberg of Emporia; one sister, Helen Kinghorn of Littleton, Colo.; 18 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Chad Nurnberg; his parents; two brothers, Robert L. Nurnberg and Ray Nurnberg; three half-brothers; George "Shorty" Nurnberg, Albert Nurnberg and Roger Nurnberg; one sister, Leona Bonewitz; and two half-sisters, Winnie Miller and Flora Schwindt.

Funeral services were Aug. 8, 2005, at the BrownBennett-Alexander Chapel in Cottonwood Falls. The Rev. Beverly Meadows and The Rev. Terry Boggs co-officiated. Interment followed in the Grandview Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hand in Hand Hospice, H.Dale Buck Foundation or the Saffordville Community Center and may be sent in care of the funeral home, 201 Cherry, Cottonwood Falls, KS 66845.
