Olson, Andrew

Andrew Olson, 91, of Council Grove, a commercial Angus breeder and rancher, died Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at the Council Grove Healthcare Center.

The son of Ole and Katie Amthauser Olson, he was born April 28, 1912, on the family farm north of White City. He graduated from Junction City High School and attended the two-year agriculture short course at Kansas State College in 1931 and 1932.

He married Helen Ebbutt in 1933. They started their Angus herd with a heifer she won in a weight-guessing contest at a live-stock event. Their ranch received the Morris County Soil Conservation and Grassland awards. They moved from Skiddy to the Four Mile Community in 1938. She died Aug. 10, 1962.

Subsequent marriages, to Edith Ramage in 1963 and Mary Mahanay in 1967, ended in divorce. He married Anna May Bowles in 1977. She survives.

Mr. Olson was a long-time member of the Flint Hills Rodeo association board. He was an organizer and long-time leader of the Four Mile 4-H Club. Earlier, he was a Geary County 4-H member. He also was a judge of Angus cattle and worked with young people and their horses and cattle at county fairs, national livestock expositions, judging con-tests and rodeos.

He is also survived by two daughters, Elaine Deschner of Big Cabin, Okla., and Mandy Stewart of Quitman, Ark.; a step-daughter Cathy Stewart of Junction City; his twin sis ter, Katharine Marston of Junction City; three grand-children; six stepgrandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one step-great-granddaughter. A stepson, Chuck Bowles; nine brothers; one sister; two granddaughters; and one stepgrandson died earlier.

The funeral was in the Council Grove Methodist Church. Gordon Morrison of Concordia and Wallace Ingmire of Council Grove conducted the service. Burial was at Four Mile Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to the Morris County 4-H Foundation or the Kansas Angus Association Scholarship Fund may be sent in care of the Penwell-Gabel Council Grove Chapel, 137 N. Union St., Council Grove, KS 66846.
