Notes from Margaret E. Haynes:

My maternal Great Grandfather, John Thomas Patton was born December 8, 1848, in Indiana, either in Terre Haute or in Sullivan County, Indiana where his siblings were born. John Thomas was 9 years old in 1868, when he came with his parents, John and Mary Ann (Ring) Patton, to Chase Co., Kansas and settled in Crawfordsville (later known as Clements).

He grew up on his parents' farm just south of where the Stone Arch Bridge was later built. On February 24, 1870, in Chase Co, Kansas, he married my Great Grandma Susan Frances Hawkins, also of Chase Co., daughter of John Wesley & Rebecca Ann (Best) Hawkins.

John Thomas & Susan Frances (Hawkins) Patton had eleven children, all but one born in Chase Co., all living to maturity, most lived to their 80's and 90's, Bertha lived to be 99 years & 11 mo. of age, she always said she was going to live to be 100 & she almost made it!, and Jessie (a daughter) lived to age of 103 years. I got to know my great aunts Bertha, Jessie and Emily, and we had some great talks, they were intelligent, witty & fun. I also know some of their children & other grandchildren of John Thomas. The children of John Thomas and Susan Frances (Hawkins) Patton: John Richard, Mary Helen, Albert Sylvester, Noah Andrew, Rebecca Elizabeth, Susan Anna, Bertha (no middle name), Winfield Scott, Jessie May, Rose Emily, and Cora Etta Patton. They lived in Chase Co. until 1904 when they moved to Sargent, Texas Co., Missouri.
