Payne, Grace L

Grace L. Payne, 85, of El Dorado died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at Susan B. Allen Memorial hospital. The Celebration of her life service was Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at the First United Methodist Church in El Dorado. Interment followed in the Labette County Cemetery.

Grace was born the youngest of seven children to William S. and Elizabeth Hammond Bennett on May 4, 1919, in Oswego. She attended country schools and graduated with the Class of 1936 from the Oswego High School. She also graduated from Layette County Junior College and received her teachers certificate.

For two years she taught school before marrying John B. Payne on Aug. 23, 1941, in Buffalo, Kans. He preceded her in death on July 10, 1994.

They moved to El Dorado in 1966 from Cottonwood Falls. She worked for Allen Abstract and the Butler County District Court for many years. She was a active member of the First United Methodist Church in El Dorado. For many years she served as a volunteer in the hospital gift store. She was the Past President of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by a son, Doug Payne of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Pat LaCalamito of Kansas City, Mo.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. The family request memorials to the First United Methodist Church or to the memorial of choice.
