Rees, Norris Smith Norris Smith Rees, 88, of Topeka died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at a Topeka Hospital.
Norris Smith Rees was born May 24, 1913, the son of John G and Nora Rees. Mr. Rees attended Mount Hope Rural School and graduated from Seaman High School in 1932. In 1933 he and his brother, Morris, opened and operated a grocery store in North Topeka until 1942. He purchased the current Rees Fruit Farm property in 1951 and was active in the operation of the farm until his death. He also served in the Kansas State Guard, First Division. Rees was active in his community and church.
He was a member of the Grantville United Methodist Church. There he served on many boards and taught many adult Sunday School classes. He has also served on the Grantville Cemetery Board, Grantville School Board, and was President of the Kansas State Horticulture Department and was a member of the Meriden Masonic Lodge #236 for many years.
He married Lucille Jones Aug. 9, 1936. She died June 27, 1952. They had three children, Richard Rees, Grantville; Jack Rees, Grantville; and Jean Cassell, Tucson, Ariz. He married Rachel Sayre on Aug 14, 1955. They have one son, Rex Rees, Topeka.
Other survivors include two sisters, Thelma McHenry, Topeka, and Ruth Sprenger, San Lorenzo, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Harry, Ralph and Morris (Norris' twin); and two sisters, Elizabeth Meltzer and Martha Sherman. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the Grantville United Methodist Church or to Countryside Christian Church. Funeral services were Jan. 15, 2002, at the Grantville United Methodist Church. Interment was at Grantville Cemetery, Grantville. Davidson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
