Schreck, Evelyn Elizabeth

Evelyn Elizabeth Schreck, 92, a recent resident of the Holiday Resort care center, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Newman Regional Health.

The daughter of Mathew James and Elizabeth Mae Hofmann McGlinn, she was born Feb. 23, 1911, in Strong City. She graduated in 1929 from Emporia High School and in 1931 from the Emporia Business College where she was in the stenographic program. She worked for Jones Construction in Emporia. During the 1930s and 1940s she worked in Wichita for the Federal Housing Authority. She was a homemaker after her marriage.

She married Sylvester A. "Pete" Schreck on Sept. 22, 1943, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He died Dec. 4, 1980, in Emporia. Mrs. Schreck was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the church Rosary Altar Society.

She is survived by two sons, James E. Schreck of Emporia and Brother John E. Schreck, OFM, of Cincinnati, Ohio; one brother, Mathew J. McGlinn Jr. of Topeka; and three sisters, Irene Slater of Athens, Ga., Emma Robinson of Pasadena, Texas, and Dorathy Chapline of Victoria, Texas. A brother, Charles "Bud" McGlinn, died earlier.

The Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, Jan. 9, at St. Catherine Catholic Church. The Rev. Dan Gardner conducted the service. Burial was held in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Memorial Contributions to the Rosary Altar Society of Sacred Heart Catholic Church may be sent to Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, P.O. Box 175, Emporia, KS 66801.
