Starkey, Bernice J. "Bonnie? Book

Elmdale native and former Emporia resident Bernice J. "Bonnie" Starkey, 91, of Jacksonville, Ill., died Saturday, July 12, 2008, at Barton W. Stone Home in Jacksonville.

The daughter of Roy Milton and Mary Louise Duke Book, she was born Aug. 6, 1916, at Elmdale. She received a lifetime teaching certificate in 1935 from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia. She taught elementary school before her marriage.

She married Fredrick William "Bill" Starkey on June 4,1938, at Emporia. He died March 15, 1990.

She was a member of Countryside Christian Church in Mission since shortly after the church's founding in 1939. She moved to Knollwood Retirement Village in Jacksonville, Ill., in 2004, then to Barton W. Stone Home in February 2006.

She is survived by one daughter, Mary Jeane McGuire of Jacksonville, Ill.; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son, Fredrick Steven Starkey and another son that died in infancy. The service was Saturday, July 19, at the Congregational Church in Jacksonville, Ill.

Burial will be in Cottonwood Falls at a later date. Memorial contributions to the Chaplaincy fund for Barton W. Stone Home or SIU Alzheimer's Foundation may be sent in care of the Williamson Funeral Home, 1405 Lincoln Ave., Jacksonville, IL 626504005.
