Thompson, Frances E
Frances E. Thompson, 85, retired teacher/homemaker, died Friday, March 12, 2004, at her home. A Witness to the Resurrection Service, with The Rev. Pat Ireland officiating, was held March 16,
2004, at the First
Presbyterian Church in
Cottonwood Falls.
Interment was at the
Homestead Cemetery,
Homestead Community.
Frances Evelyn Mounkes, the daughter of Walter and Mary Sattler Mounkes, was born April 15, 1918, at the family
home in the Reading/Neosho Rapids area of Lyon county.
She married James Lloyd Thompson on Feb. 19,
1939, in Homestead Community. He preceded her in death on April 10,
1984.
She had taught for some years in country schools in Chase County. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church,
U.S.A. and the Presbyterian Women. She belonged to the Embroidery Club, Bunco Club, Priscilla Club, and was a past member of the Homestead Ladies Aid. She was a true volunteer: worked and gave tours of the Historic Chase
County Courthouse, cleaned and helped plant flower beds, and many other beautification tasks.
She is survived by two daughters, Janice G. Johnson of Bazaar and Marcia L. Allen of Cincinnati, Ohio; a son, James Lloyd Thompson of Lakewood, Colo.; a brother, Clarence Mounkes of
Emporia; a sister, Darlene K. Bloom Mounkes of Winston-Salem, N.C.; seven grandchildren; five
step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great step-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Darrel Mounkes, John
Mounkes, J. Owen Mounkes and Floyd Mounkes; and one sister, Eleanor Greene.
Memorial contributions to the First Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. or to the Chase County Chamber of Commerce for the Frances Thompson Cottonwood Falls Beautification Fund may be sent in care of Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home, 201 Cherry, Cottonwood Falls, KS 66845.
