Head-on crash ignites vehicles and takes both drivers' lives
Dale England, 52, of Haysville and Steven Trimble, 45, of Valley Center died when their vehicles collided head-on on Highway 50 approximately 8.4 miles west of the junction of highways 150 and 50 in Chase County Saturday, Sept. 20.
Both men were traveling with their wives at the time of the accident. They survived.
Linda England, 47, was taken to St. Francis Hospital and Debra Trimble, 46, was taken to Wesley Hospital, both in Wichita. Officials said Monday that both women were in stable condition.
The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) accident report said that England's vehicle was westbound on Highway 50 at the time of the accident. Trimble's eastbound vehicle, the report said, crossed the centerline and struck England's vehicle head-on.
Both vehicles then caught fire, the KHP report said.
Passersby were able to get the two women out of the vehicles. The men were pinned in and could not be saved, officials said.
Chase County Sheriff Gerald Ingalls said the flames followed the impact so quickly that no amount of fire-fighting equipment would have sufficed to save the two men.
