Clarke County was first established in 1867. It was named in honor of Charles F. Clarke, an officer during the Civil War. The ending letter "e" was dropped from the name in an act of 1873. In 1875, Clark County's territory was extended to the north and to the west. Clark County was absorbed by Ford County in 1883, but Clark County was reestablished in 1885.
Ashland is the county seat.
