Obituary
Mary Elizabeth Williams was born eight miles north west of Ottawa Oct. 1 1872.
She was married to W. L. McCandless Oct. 1 1890. To this union were born three children, Layton of Princeton and Ellen and Willie of Lebo. Mr. McCandless purchased the Lebo telephone exchange in 1912 and the family has resided here since.
Mrs. McCandless being in failing health went down to Ottawa with her father four weeks before her death thinking that a change and a chance to be under treatment of her old family physician would benefit her, but with all that medical skill could give she continued to fail, suffering greatly. Tuesday the family decided to take her to Wesley hospital in Kansas City to see if she might find some relief; but this was to no avail. She passed away at 8:10 a.m. Wednesday October the ninth at the age of 46 years and nine days.
She joined the United Brethren at Hopewell Kansas when she was sixteen years of age and remained a faithful member of that church until her death. She was in regular attendance at the S. S. and church services at the Lebo M. E. church when her health permitted. She was a devoted companion, a kind and loving mother and a good neighbor always ready to assist where there was sickness or sorrow. She was at her post of duty in the Red Cross room as long as she was able to go. She was a good citizen and will be greatly missed.
Friday afternoon at 1:30 the funeral was held at the M. E. Church where a large number of her neighbors and friends assembled in loving respect to her memory. By request of the family Rev. Webb read the 14th. chapter of the gospel of St. John and drew from it a comforting lesson for the sorrowing ones. Choice selections of music were given, specials being given by Mrs. Lela Blue and Miss Ruth Edwards. The beautiful floral offerings were a fitting symbol of the love of relatives and friends.
The remains were laid away in Lincoln cemetery while the soul of her was transformed to brighter realms, for:
"There is no Death! What seems so is
transition:
This life of mortal breath
Is but a suburb of the life elysian.
Whose portal we call death.
She is not dead, only gone before,
To be restored on the other shore."

The deceased is survived by her husband and children, her father and one brother. Her mother and two sisters preceded her in death.
The relatives from a distance attending the funeral were the son Layton and wife of Princeton, her father, W. H. Williams and her brother, Willie Williams and family of Ottawa. Others were Mr. McCandless's father, N. W. and wife of Coffeyville, his brother O. G. and wife, of Richmond, his sister, Mrs. W. J. Welch and family, and his brother-in-law C. E. Peck of Ottawa. William Stonebraker and wife of Emporia, Orville Stonebraker and wife of Waverly, Harry Shannon and wife, Ollie Shannon and daughter of Wellsville, all cousins of Mr. McCandless, were present. Had the roads not been muddy there would have been a long procession of cars from Ottawa bringing hosts of friends who had known and loved Mrs. McCandless from girlhood.

Word has been received that Curtis Watson is in a hospital in Virginia very sick with Influenze. Ray Tennis had a slight attack but was not sick enough to be taken to the hospital.
The indications now are that the ban will be lifted Saturday night and that there will probably be the regular services at both churches Sunday. Though this is not official.
Very fortunately the Influenza epidemic does not seem to be spreaking in this community and the few scattered cases are recovering nicely.
We will venture J. M. Black has spent lots of breath answering questions about electric lights, and its a fine thing that he has a good stoch of patience.
Mrs. Katie Saueressig-Shetler, of Paso Robles, Calif., mourns the loss of her baby who died Sept. 19. She has the sympathy of friends here.
