KENDALL
Betty (ksroots3@aol.com) 23 June 2008

what town Rumseyville was near? What cemeteries would be near there? Was there a
newspaper in Comanche County during that time period? Elijah KENDALL was a
printer who often worked for newspapers. I would like to know the names of the
infants or any other information about the family.

CODA
Mike Morton (poppamike@mchsi.com) 28 April 2004
I am trying
to discover information regarding my maternal Grandmother, Elsie Mae
CODA. She was born May 4, 1890, reportedly near Coldwater, Kansas. Her
older brother, Elmer, born March 18, 1887, in his obituary identified
Coldwater as his place of birth. I have found no listing for CODAs in
the 1880 or 1900 census for Comanche County. So apparently the family
came and left again between these dates. Our family believes the Elsie's
father was named Albert CODA and her mother was named Nancy Ann, but I
have no support for this. Elsie also had brothers named Albert, (b: June
19, 1885); Warren, b: October 28, 1892; and Fred, b: abt. 1894), some of
whom may have been born in Comanche County. We also believe Elsie's
parents divorced, probably after about 1893 and before 1900. Any
information identifying Elsie's parents would be greatly appreciated.
THOMAS
Carol Grigg (cgrigg@kalispell.com) 20 January 2004
My
father was raised in Comanche County, his name was Ruel Victor THOMAS;
he had many brothers and sisters, i.e. Harley. One sister was a school
teacher and adopted some children. I remember one cousin, Eileen. Last
time I visited Coldwater was in 1948 with my father. We visited his
parents who are now deceased and I can't remember their first names, but
they were pretty old in 1948 and spoke a foreign language at times.
Also, I remember another cousin named Carol (about my age), that lived
in Coldwater. I am trying to locate relatives. The THOMAS family had
many ranches in the neighborhood (pigs, wheat). I was only 13 at the
time I visited so don't remember much. I believe my father's body was
shipped back to Coldwater and is buried there.

VANCE...WALTHER
Erin Abbott
(ekabb2002@yahoo.com) 16 October 2002
I am looking for information on
my Great-Grandparents, James Lloyd VANCE and Jessie Pearl VANCE. Family
oral history has it that they were both raised in Protection, Kansas and
then married and moved to Gate, Oklahoma around 1900. I do not know
their parent's names, but it is said the J. L.'s father migrated to
Kansas from Tennessee to avoid fighting as a Confederate in the Civil
War.
Jessie's mother's maiden name was WALTHER and her family came
from Germany in 1848 to Iowa and then to Kansas, I'm not sure when.
Jessie's father was a VANCE also, so her name remained VANCE her whole
life, although supposedly J.L. and Jessie were not related. The only
other information I have is that J.L. had a cousin named Harry VANCE who
moved From Protection to Enid, Oklahoma and was very successful. Any
additional information would be very much appreciated!

McCABE
Jim Freed (jmfreed@midohio.net)
28 August 2000
The family of Frank McCABE and Ida May (PLAISTED)
McCABE is listed in the 1920 census for Comanche County, Kansas. From
this list we have determined that they had the following children, with
approximate birth dates (all born in Kansas except where noted): Horace
McCABE, 1896; Virgil McCABE, 1898; Edna McCABE, 1899; Joe McCABE, 1904
(b: Oklahoma); Theodore McCABE, 1907 (b: Oklahoma); Clifford McCABE,
1912 (b: Oklahoma); Arnold McCABE, 1916.
We have documented only one
of these children, Virgil McCABE, who died in 1972 in Bartlesville,
Oklahoma. His death certificate indicates that he was buried in the
Wilmore Cemetery, Wilmore, Kansas. Two questions:
1.) Is this the
correct name for this cemetery? (a cemetery locator available from the
Comanche County website does not recognize this name)
2.) Is there a
cemetery reading available for this cemetery? (We are interested in
other McCABEs buried there, perhaps his parents, as there must have been
a family connection for him to be buried in Comanche County, since he
was living in Oklahoma.)

PAULY
David Pauly (dapbase@email.msn.com) 28
October 1999
Need information on possible birth certificates for the
years 1885 and 1886 in the town of Coldwater, Comanche County, Kansas.
If other than certificates, were newspapers or civil records or other
public notices used in that time period?
Specifically, I need the
particulars of the birth of my father, his sister and brother; Howard
Clyde PAULY, Edith LaVerne PAULEY and Jay PAULY. They were born to
Charles David PAULY (an Artesian well digger) and Anna PAULY in
Coldwater, Kansas, which was their residence for at least 14 years. Any
and all suggestions as to where and how to look will be greatly
appreciated. I have no information on when C. D. and Anna moved to
Coldwater, or where they lived. I am positive they were residents from
circa 1850 to possibly 1900. I am actually searching for my Grandfather,
Charles David PAULY, and hope that the birth records of his children may
give me a clue as to his origins.

I am looking for any
information on either of these names; John McCOY, my Great-Grandfather,
he lived and owned land in Coldwater in the 1890's. His son, John Jr.,

CHRISTEY/CHRISTY...POWELL...DUNCAN
Larry Shoger (ldshoger@aol.com) 4
September 1999
I am searching for information on Cornelius Jethro
CHRISTEY/CHRISTY, such as death date, where buried, obituary, photos,
etc. I do know that he was born on October 14, 1861 in Iowa to George W.
and Sophrana (TIMMONS) CHRISTEY. Around 1874 he moved to Missouri with
his father, step-mother and siblings. On April 4, 1885, he was married
to Louisa E. BENEAR in Chillicothe, Livingston County, Missouri. They
had two daughters, Alice A. (Mrs. Joseph W. DUNCAN), born in May 1890
and Mildred R., born October 1893. Louisa must have died prior to 1900
in either Missouri or Kansas. Cornelius and his two daughters were
farming in Burlingame Township, Osage County, Kansas in 1900. By 1904,
Cornelius was living in Coldwater, Comanche County, Kansas. On March,
1904 he purchased 160 acres of land - NW/4 (17-32-18) which he sold on
May 2, 1905 to Alex SHARP. On August 9, 1905 he purchased lots 10, 11,
12 of block 20 from Parker WRIGHT. He sold this property (Lots 10 - 13)
to Thomas B. DUNCAN on September 3, 1907. Thomas DUNCAN was father to
Joseph W. DUNCAN who married Cornelius' daughter, Alice. On May 14,
1913, Cornelius married Elzada POWELL, widow of Isaac N. POWELL, who
died on February 22, 1894 in Comanche County. Isaac and Elzada had two
sons, Claude, born 1883 in Nebraska, and Earl, born 1878. Earl died on
May 14, 1900 in Wichita, Kansas. He never married. Claude married
February 23, 1906 to Pearl SCHNEIDER in Coldwater. Claude was a livery
man. It appears Cornelius CHRISTEY passed away between February 19, 1913
and September 18, 1919 as Elzada (POWELL) CHRISTEY is reflected as a
widow on the 1919 document. The 1910 Census also reflects a Claude
CHRISTEY born 1885 in Nebraska working as a farm hand for Bert and Lena
GRIFFITH. His relationship to Cornelius in unknown. The 1900 census also
reflects Mildred R. CHRISTEY working as a dishwasher at the Oxford House
owned by Kirtland and Hattie NORTHRUP.

BELL
Martin Smith (joan_and_marty@email.msn.com) 26 February 1999
I would like to have suggestions on a good source book that might shed
some light on homesteading in Comanche County, Kansas during the 1880's.
My Grandmother is said to have homesteaded in the county then, although
she was unmarried at that time. She is said to have sold her property to
a brother-in-law whose name was BELL. Family legend also has it that she
was concerned about a possible Indian uprising during her time in
Comanche County, although the uprising did not occur.

SCHROCK
Janet Hubbard
(imaginethat@portgualala.com) 30 November 1998
I am searching for all
the information anyone might have about the arrest, trial and
imprisonment of my Grandfather, Harve(y) S. SCHROCK, who lived in
Wilmore, Comanche County, Kansas from the early 1900's until the late
1950's when he moved to a nursing home outside the county, where he died
in 1961. I have learned in recent years that he operated a large still
under his barn outside Wilmore. I believe his arrest, trial and
imprisonment took place during the 1920's, probably before 1927. If you
have any information at all about this event, I would be extremely
grateful for it. Although he was raised a Mennonite and never drank that
we knew of, he evidently conducted this business because it was the only
way he could get enough money to put my father through college, since
the weather was so bad and the crops were failing year after year. I am
interested in dates, information about the trial, etc.
HAZEN
Ann Shoot (shootme@acadiacom.net) 13 November 1998

Subsequently they moved back to Ohio. Does anyone have any historical
information on this attempt to settle in the area, or any information on
the TICKHILL family? I really would appreciate any tidbit of
information.
