WHITE/CHASE/BEAN/PHILLIPS/T__EWELL: My great grandfather James A WHITE married second, Mattie BECKER. They had eight children. When James died in 1917 at Fort Scott, his obituary listed his married daughters only by their spouses names, so I do not know who married whom. Therefore, am seeking any descendants of the following: Carl CHASE of Joplin Mo in 1917 (I found a Carl Frederick CHASE buried 1946 in Cherokee City Crawford Co KS cemetery listing.); AC BEAN of Ottawa KS in 1917; Robert PHILLIPS of Cherokee KS in 1917; The youngest daughter, Catherine WHITE married Gene Allen TEWELL after 1917 who was a school principal in Mulberry KS at time of wedding, but moving to Caney KS as principal the next year. The Kansas State Historical Society has some information on doctors, and will be able to help.
For the first link, the library staff will copy the requested information. Refer to the link on the page for more information. The second link is a reference to a book at the society Library. Quite likely, if your doctor died in Kansas, he will be listed in the index.
Their home page is www.kshs.org If you go there and take the
link to "Research and Collections", you will find a treasure trove of sources, many of which are micro filmed and available for interlibrary loan. Search around, especially the links to "Newspapers", "Census" and "Genealogy".

Kansas. Historical Society. Library. Index to Obituaries from the Kansas Medical Journal, 1889-1966. 1967. 37 pp.
Contains the name, date and place of death, and the volume and page number of the obituary. Obituaries usually include the doctor's age or birth date, name of medical school, year of graduation, and specialty. These obituaries are "professional" obituaries and do not contain any family information as such. Between 1966 and 1980, the obituaries are individually cataloged in the Kansas card catalog. The index continues from 1981 to 1983 when obituaries were not longer printed in the Kansas Medical Journal.
You will need to check the newspaper microfilms for an obituary containing family information. This is the search page link:
http://www.kshs.org/library/news.htm
And this page lists various county records micro filmed and available for interlibrary loan:

Yes, I am still looking for information on Edward Francis Hoffman and family. I still need to find out when they moved to Cherokee and when they moved on. Also, the maiden and given name of Edward's second wife. She was a widow and her previous married surname was Clements. His first wife, Louisa Cordelia Crump is believed to have died in Cherokee on or around 20 March 1881 and was supposed to have been buried in Kansas but I have not found her listed in the cemetery in Cherokee. My grandfather Arthur Francis Hoffman was born in or near Cherokee, Kansas in 1877. Edward attended the College of the Bible in Kentucky from 1870 to 1872. He and Louisa married on 3 March 1876. It appears that they moved to the Cherokee area between March 1876 and January 1877. I believe they continued to live in the area at least through 1881.

I believe that his brother, John Calvin Ford was still living the area till his death on February 23, 1963. I am also interested to know if they are in the 1910 Crawford County, Kansas Census After the death they moved back to Carroll County Missouri area.
I believe their address at the time they lived in Pittsburg was: 504 Fairview Street in Pittsburg. Would any one know what township that was in, in 1910 Crawford County, Kansas Census.
Any information on these families would be appreciated. Spelling of names may vary.
Thanks in advance.

My understanding of cemetery vocabulary is that a "Potters' Field" is for people unable to pay for a gravesite and/or stone - often those on relief or such. Almost every cemetery contains such a section. Hope this helps. You must get thousands of hits if you are searching by "Potter". Good luck.

My grandmother Hallie Gay Thomas Kyrias was very active in the Grand Army of the Republic-Womens Relief Corps. This was a kind of benevolent society/support group for Civil War veterans and their families. I've been trying to get information about which chapter she was in (she was the pianist for many years.) Also, I'm trying to find out where GAR materials are archived.
The bottom line is that I'm trying to find information about the people through whom she would have had eligibility to join the GAR. (It was probably Milo Thomas and/or Jacob Mowder but I can't prove it yet.)
This has been frustrating because no one seems to remember or even have heard of the Grand Army of the Republic. Yet this was a very big deal from after the Civil War well into the 20's and later.
Any help greatly appreciated!!

Hello,
I'm looking for what enumeration district Ringo, Kansas might have been in in the 1920 census. Looking at Ancestry.com and their holdings, they have 43 enumeration districts in Crawford County, but none of them mention Ringo, and they are not descriptive enough to figure out which might have the data I'm looking for.
If anybody can help me with this information, it would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Hello,
I'm looking for any information that might be out there for my great grandparents John Verbais and Susanna Draksler. They were both immigrants from Slovenia, who settled in Ringo, Kansas around 1910. They had four children, Susanna Mary Louise in 1916, John in 1918, Helen in 1920, and Henry in 1922.
If anybody has run across these folks in their research, I would be very happy to talk to you...
Thanks!

At the GenWeb site for Kansas - when I logged out I went there automatically - there is an area with old maps of the counties. The one for Crawford County is in color and dated 1878 and shows 9 townships - Walnut, Sherman, Lincoln, Grant, Crawford, Washington, Osage, Sheridan and Baker. It doesn't show a lot of detail, but if all you need is twp locations this might help.

Following information that I received I request birth records from 1909, 1887 and 1884 from the county district court. They have no record of these individuals existing and to top it off then have no records of any kind prior to 1886. What are others doing to try to document births of this time frame?

All info that I have gotten on the Truxal's that I am researching I have gotten at the Genealogy Historical Society in Columbus, KS in Crawford Co (that is not it's name exactly but Columbus is not a big town and it is a building of its own so you should be able to find it. I have the name written down, but can't find it right now. They have all the records (still lots to put out front; they showed me their back storage room). The people that work there are VERY helpful. They found wills, marriage records (back to 1869) and census records for me. They even had notes written on small pieces of paper regarding a will of an uncle. What helps is that KS did census records in 1895 so it helps since all census records for 1890 were burned. They have the tax records and info on many cemeteries. They also have a list of people in a book that will do look-ups for you (for a fee). Call them and they will be able to help you.

Would this be the same records that the Family History Library has on microfilms? I have ordered many of them and have discovered many marriage records. We live in California so getting to Kansas is a real problem. When I was a young child I lived in the town of Cherokee so I'm somewhat familiar with the area.

Looking for further info on two brothers in Crawford County, KS. Both moved from Hancock County, IN. They are the sons of Lot and Mary Martin WRIGHT.

2. Addison F. WRIGHT (b. 1848, Hancock County, IN - d. Unk.) md. Mary E. GANT, (poss. prior married name was FOUT) on 4 Jul 1875 in Hancock County, IN. In 1882 they were living in Crawford County, KS, along with Mary's mother, Barsheba GANT. They mailed notarized documents to Hancock County on property sales. I haven't yet researched property records in Crawford County.
3. A connected person, William Martin BRIZENDINE (1875 IN - 1921 KS) also lived in the Crawford County, KS area. He was Addison WRIGHT's cousin - his mother's sister's son.
