MRS. WILL VERNON (Clarissa)

Clarissa Dew was born in Belmont County, Ohio, October 4, 1850 and died at
her home in Norcatur, Kansas, July 21, 1943, at the age of 92 years, 9
months and 17 days.
She was left an orphan at infancy and her only sister, Flora Dew, died in
1886 (28 Aug 1887 Nr. Norcatur, Decatur, KS).
On December 19, 1867, she was married to William Vernon. To this union were
born twelve children six of whom preceded her in death, four - Flora,
Alfred, Lola, and Leonard died in infancy. Mrs. Etta Swayne in September,
1938; and R. B. Vernon in August 1941.
Mrs. Vernon is survived by six children. Mrs. Laura Haden of Littleton,
Colorado; Mrs. Mae Wood of Norcatur; Mrs. Dennie (Bessie) Gallentine of
Omaha, Nebraska; Mrs. Olive Robinson of Portland, Oregon; Roscoe Vernon of
Norcatur; and Mrs. Zella Pennington of Denver, Colorado; fifteen
grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren and two great-great
grandchildren.
Mrs. Vernon spent her early life in Ohio, coming to Kansas in 1884 with her
husband, six children, and her sister. In 1885 they settled on a homestead
eight miles northwest of Norcatur where they resided until the spring of
1919 when they moved to Norcatur.
Mr. Vernon passed away August 30, 1919.
Mrs. Vernon was raised a Quaker but after coming to Kansas she joined the
United Brethren Church and later, in 1922, transferred to the Norcatur
Methodist Church of which she had been a faithful member ever since. Mrs.
Vernon was a fine Christian character, beloved by all who knew her and will
be greatly missed by her many relatives and friends.
