Man Drowns In Sandpit
Dewey Relph, Cedar Bluffs Resident, Loses Life In Pit In Indianola Area

Dewey Relph, 47, of Cedar Bluffs, Kans., was drowned Sunday noon when he
fell into a sandpit located about one mile south of Indainola.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the Herrmann Funeral
home.  Rev. C. M. Smitley will conduct the service.  Burial will be in the
family plot at Cedar Bluffs, his former home.  He had been employed in the
McCook vicinity in recent months.
His parents and four children survive Mrs. (Mr.) Relph.  His daughters,
Mrs. Jessie Eoff and Mrs. Lottie Mullen make their homes in Omaha.  Another
daughter, Doria and a son, Alfred (Alfred Willard Relph is Dewey's brother,
not son) live in Laird, Colo., which is also the home of his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. James G. Relph.  Other survivors include five brothers and sisters.
County Sheriff Emmett Trosper, who was called to the scene shortly after
noon, said that no further investigation of the drowning was believed
necessary.  The incident is regarded as the result of an accident.
From unofficial sources it was reported that Relph and several others had
gone to the sandpit for an outing and that he was at some distance from the
others of the main group when he went into the water.
A soldier from the Indianola prisoner of War camp and a young man from
Indianola whose name was not learned dived repeatedly for Relph.  We was
brought out finally and artificial respiration applied without result.
Persons at the scene said Relph's body bore a long gash on the forehead.
