RESIDENT OF THE COUNTY FOR FIFTY-TWO YEARS DIES

Robert Moses Johnston, son of Thomas [Jefferson] and Cynthia Ann [Drake]
Johnston was born in Elkhart County Indiana, November 14, 1850. He
departed this life August 16, 1931, age 80 years, 9 months, 2 days.

His early life was spent in Iowa. In 1879 he came west to Republic
County Kansas and in the fall came to Decatur County and took a
homestead four miles west of Oberlin and has made his home in Decaur
County for 52 years.

On February 9, 1887, he was united in marriage to Jennie E. Morton. To
this union six children were born, who with the mother are left to mourn
the passing of a kind husband and loving father. The children, three
sons, Marvin of Seibert, Colo.; Millard of Kansas City, Mo.; Oren of
Oberlin, three daughters, Mrs. Indiana Hill, Achilles., Mrs. Orpha
Bosler, Traer, and Mrs. Josephine Bosler, Oberlin, also twenty-two
grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Bob, as he was generally known, was a kind and honest man always willing
to help his neighbors in time of need and, as a true pioneer through
hard years, struggled to help build the community he loved so well.

He retired from farm life some ten years ago and has since resided in
Oberlin. He was always a strong and rugged man until about three years
ago, when he began to fail. He rallied for a time but about three weeks
ago began to fail rapidly and was unable to withstand the intense
suffering.

All was done that loving hands could do but he passed quietly away
Sunday evening. Although not wholly unexpected, his death came as a
great shock to his family.

Services were held at the Presbyterian church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30,
conducted by Rev. Bartholomew. The body was laid to rest in the Oberlin
cemetery, amid a host of sorrowing friends and relatives. A good man has
gone to his reward.
