"S.O. Munger Passes Away
Silas O. Munger was born in the
state of New York, Feb. 17, 1833, died at his home in Oberlin, Sept., 19,
1912, aged 79 years 7 months and 2 days.
He was married to Eliza J. Jackson Sept 7, 1856. To this union three
children were born, Mrs. W. R. McCalla who died several years ago, Mrs.
John Forsdick and Leroy S. Munger who lives in the state of Washington and
who was unable to be present at the funeral.
Mr. Munger had been a member of the Baptist church since young manhood and
was one of the most consistant members of the Baptist church of Oberlin
and was faithful in his attendance at its hours of worship.
In 1862 he enlisted in the 18th Iowa Infantry and served to the close of
the war, being mustered out in August 1865. His record as a soldier
was excellent and he was ever ready to do his duty as a man and soldier of
the Union Army.
Soon after leaving the army his health failed where he lived in Wisconsin
and he moved to Nebraska, where he improved a farm and lived for many
years, being very successful in that avocation. His change of
climate restoring him completely to health and his old time vigor.
Some 12 years ago he moved to this city to be nearer his children and has
been one of our most respected citizens. We have had many talks with
him and he was ever a pleasant companion and an interesting talker.
We shall miss his kindly greeting but will ever remember his Chiristian
example, well knowing that his passing away is only to receive that reward
that remains alone to those who have lived a Godly life and earned that
well deserved plaudit, "Well done thou good and faithful servant,
enter thou late the joys of thy Lord."
