A PIONEER COUNTRY CEMETERY
CALLED PRAIRIE MOUND
A Brief History
Remember The Days Of Old
My name
is Delores Young. My mother was Levern Thomas Merrill and she was born here
in
Mulberry Township. Her mother was Lucy May Violet Miller Thomas, and
she, too, was born in
Mulberry Township at a place known as Delight. My
mother's parents, grandparents, and even
great grandparents are buried
here. Some of my earliest memories are of attending Decoration
Day
services here with my family. I've also been here to attend burial services
for members
of my family.
I have become a family historian, and
one of my chief interests is this cemetery and the people
who lie at
rest here. At present, I serve as a resource person for the internet
USGenWeb
project for Ellsworth County, with special emphasis on the
Mulberry area. Because of this, I
am occasionally contacted by people
who have family members buried here, and they ask me for
information
about their family. I am trying to bring my cemetery records up to date so
I can
help them. I have a large body of information, but I solicit your
help in this effort. If any
of you have dates of birth and death or
military service of anyone buried here, please contact
me so I can add
that to my records.
I've been asked why this cemetery has three
names. It is sometimes called Yordy after the
Yordy family who settled
here about 1866, according to family tradition. A Yordy Post Office
was
established nearby in 1875. The cemetery is also called Mulberry because of
its location
in the beautiful Mulberry valley near Mulberry Creek, and
is now in Mulberry Township, although
that entity was not formed until
October 1, 1906. Prairie Mound Cemetery was given that name
by the
couple who homesteaded this property, Reverend George Wilson Miller and his
wife, Mary
(Colerider) Miller. That is the official name it carries in
the land records found at the
Register of Deeds Office in the Ellsworth
County Courthouse. It is also the name assigned in
the Daughters of the
American Revolution survey which was accomplished about 1940 and published
by that organization. George and Mary Miller established their home on
this property in spring
of 1870 and it appears that burials were
commenced here about that time. Among the earliest
burials in this place
were the parents of George W. Miller, his father, George William Miller,
in 1876, and his mother, Mary Elizabeth (Jeffries) Miller, in 1878. It
appears that members of
the Henry family might have been laid to rest
here earlier than that, and perhaps others.
George and Mary Miller
donated this five acre parcel of their property to the Prairie Mound
Cemetery Association in 1886 so that it might continue to serve as a
burying ground for the
community.
Today I would like to
especially remember those Civil War veterans who are buried beneath this
parcel of Kansas sod. Kansas is sometimes called the "Soldiers' State"
because of the large
number of Civil War veterans who settled here soon
after the end of that conflict. The
Homestead Act of 1862 promised 160
acres of land to any settler who would move west and make a
home on the
prairie. Many of the earliest settlers in this area did just that. Of the
three
hundred plus known burials in this cemetery, fourteen are
confirmed veterans of the Union Army
in the Civil War. There may be
others who are not known to us who lie here in unmarked graves,
or
without a government stone or Grand Army of the Republic marker to tell us
of their
sacrifice. These are the men who served their country through
a bitter war, and brought their
families west, hoping for a better
life. They built their homes of whatever materials they had
available
to them. Some built Kansas dugouts on the prairie, some built soddies, some
erected
small cabins, some even brought their wood with them to build a
dwelling. They suffered
through many hardships including drought, heat,
blizzards, grasshopper plagues, prairie fires,
and the threat of Indian
depredations. In spite of all this, they have left us a priceless
legacy of courage, industry, and faith. Because of my interest in the many
members of my family who are buried here, and because this land was part of
the homestead of my great grandfatherÆs brother, I have conducted a good
deal of research which concerns this cemetery and the people buried here. I
would like to share some of that information with you today by telling you
a little about the military service of the fourteen men that have been
identified as veterans of the Civil War who lie in this sacred place.
1. Reverend Frederick J. Bruce was born in 1839 in Germany, immigrated
to Erie, Ohio, with
his family, and served in Company C of the 2nd Ohio
Cavalry Regiment. At the close of the war,
he came to Kansas, and
settled in Ellsworth County in the fall of 1869. He was the charge
minister of the Mulberry United Brethren Church when it was formed nearby
in 1878. He died in
1919.
2. Henry Diehl was born in 1837 in
Hessen, Germany, immigrated to Philadelphia in this country,
then to
Missouri, where he served in Company B of the 5th Missouri Cavalry
Regiment. After the
war was over, he came to Kansas and drove a freight
wagon from Ft. Riley to Ft. Harker. He
settled in Spring Creek
Township, Saline County, where he was a farmer. He died in 1917.
3.
David H. Fry was born in 1842 in Logan County, Ohio, and served in Company
A of the 82nd
Ohio Regiment. After the war he moved to Kansas and
settled in Garfield Township of Ellsworth
County, which later became
Mulberry Township. He died in 1914.
4. Aaron Hoss was born in 1843
in Iowa and served in Company G of the 4th Iowa Regiment.
After the
war, he moved to Missouri, then to Kansas and took up a homestead in
Madison Township,
Lincoln County. He died in 1893.
5. Harrison
H. Howell was born in 1836 in Ohio and served in Company C of the 132nd
Ohio
Regiment. After the war ended, he moved his family to Madison
Township, Lincoln County,
Kansas. He died in 1917.
6. Henry S.
Hoyt was born in 1834 in Ohio and served in Company C of the 2nd Ohio Heavy
Artillery. He came to Kansas after the war and settled in Garfield
Township, Ellsworth County,
Kansas. His farm was in what is now
Mulberry Township. He died in 1926.
7. Henry Kuntz was born in 1824
and probably served in Company G of the 2nd Minnesota Cavalry.
He moved
to Kansas following the war and lived in this area. He died in 1883.
8. Charles M. F. Martin was born in 1841 in Germany and immigrated to
America. where he served
in Company E of the 8th New York Infantry
Regiment. Following the war, he moved to Kansas and
lived in Glendale
Township, Saline County. He died in 1914.
9. John McKenzie was born
in 1806 and probably served in Company F of the 8th Kansas Infantry
Regiment. A veteran marker indicating he served from 1861 to 1865 stands on
his grave. He
died in 1914.
10. Reverend George Wilson Miller
was born in 1833 near Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and enlisted
as a
Corporal in Company B of the 2nd Regiment of (West) Virginia Mounted
Infantry, later
serving as Sergeant Major in the 5th and 6th Regiments
of West Virginia Cavalry. He rose
through the ranks to become a 1st
Lieutenant in Company H of the 6th West Virginia Cavalry. He
was
captured and imprisoned at Richmond, Virginia. Following the War, he
commanded a
detachment of the 6th West Virginia Cavalry and was sent to
serve in the territories of
Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming and Dakota. He
returned to his family in West Virginia in spring
1866, and a year
later immigrated to central Kansas, bringing with him his wife and
children,
his parents, two sisters and two brothers and their families.
As stated earlier, this family
settled on this property in the spring
of 1870. George was a minister of the gospel and was a
leader of the
United Brethren Church and served as a circuit rider of that church. He
died in
1914.
11. Pleasant Jeffries Miller, a brother of George,
was born in 1843 in Uniontown, Pennsylvania,
and served in Company B of
the 17th West Virginia Regiment. He was captured and imprisoned at
Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia. In 1867, he emigrated to central Kansas
with his parents,
brothers and sisters. He settled in this township in
1870 and lived at Delight, where he was
a farmer. He died in 1921.
12. Richard M. J. Miller, a brother of George, was born in 1841 in
Uniontown, Pennsylvania,
and served as a Sergeant in Company B of the
3rd West Virginia Cavalry Regiment. He was
captured and imprisoned at
Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia. After the War, he immigrated to
central Kansas with his parents, sisters and brothers.. He settled in
Mulberry Valley and took
up his homestead here in spring of 1870. He
spent some of his life in the Colorado Rockies,
where he worked in the
gold mines. He died in 1915.
13. Jonathan Neel was born in 1825 in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and served in Company K of
the 68th
Pennsylvania Regiment. After the War, he moved to Madison Township, Lincoln
County,
Kansas, where he was a farmer. He died in 1905.
14.
Edward Charles Thomas, Sr., was born in 1836 near Leipzig, Germany, and
immigrated to this
country, settling in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He
served as a Corporal in Company F of the
198th Pennsylvania Infantry. He
was severely injured during the War . In 1878, he brought his
family to
central Kansas, settling first in Saline County, later moving to Mulberry
Township,
Ellsworth County, where he was a farmer. He is said to have
been the person who began the
tradition of carrying the American flag
for Decoration Day services in this cemetery. He died
in 1910.
Let us remember these men and their families who once lived nearby and
sleep eternally in this
beautiful spot. Let us also remember that there
were many other veterans who took up residence
here and, for various
reasons, moved to other parts of the country. We can be sure they were
here because their names appear in official records, and certain members of
their families are
buried here, an everlasting reminder of the fact
that they once shared in the life of this
community. The names of those
veterans who are known to have lived here long ago are:
1.
Charles S. Allen, born in 1828 in Newberg, New Jersey, served in Company I
of the
28th New Jersey Regiment. His wife is buried here.
2.
Reverend Alexander Corwin was born in 1823 in Ohio, served in Company D of
the
45th Ohio Regiment. He leaves here a son.
3. James Henry
Dumpprope was born in 1846 in Upper Canada, now Ontario, served in an
Independent Unit of Wisconsin Cavalry. He leaves an infant daughter here.
4. John DeShazer, born 1819 in Martin County, Indiana,, served in
Hutchinson County,
Kansas, Infantry. He leaves here a married daughter
and three of her children.
5. Armstrong G. McGill, born 1840 in
Pennsylvania, served in Company G of the 1st West
Virginia Regiment. He
leaves here a baby son.
6. Thadeus A. Moore was born in 1847 in
Pennsylvania and is listed on the Ellsworth
County census of Civil War
veterans taken in 1883. His infant son is buried here.
7. Hector
Spurgeon, born 1841, served in Company E of the 8th Kansas Infantry. He
leaves here an infant child.
8. Reverend Larkin A. Stucker, born
1834 in Indiana, served in Company C of the
13th Regiment of Iowa
Infantry. He leaves here a married daughter and four of
her children.
We should be proud of the contributions all of these pioneers made
to the service of their
country, to the settlement of the community in
this area, and to the history of this great
land. We honor their memory
today.

Delores Young (21 JUN 1934 - 14 MAY 2010) - Rest in Peace Delores M. Young (1934-2010) Delores M. Young, 75, Aurora, Colo., died May 14, 2010. Mrs. Young was born June 21, 1934, at Kanopolis to Kenneth A. and Elsie Laverne (Thomas) Merrill. She graduated as valedictorian in 1952 from Kanopolis High School. She attended Fort Hays State University for a year until her Jan. 31, 1954, marriage to S-Sgt. William M. Young. Her health was a lifetime issue and she passed away as the result of a stroke in December 2009. (sic) Survivors include her husband; five children, Walter, Mark, Robert, Susan and David; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. from the Ellsworth Independent Reporter December 30, 2010
