Finney County was officially formed in 1884. It was named in honor of It was
named in honor of David Finney, who became the Lieutenant Governor of Kansas.
Its boundaries greatly varied in the early years. Portions of the counties of Kearny,
Sequoyah, Grant, Arapahoe, Kansas, Stevens, Meade, Clark, and Buffalo were each,
at some point, a part of Finney County. In 1893, Finney County gained territory
after annexing Garfield County.
Garden City is the county seat.
