WHAT'S IN A NAME?
In 1873 the Kansas Legislature named and set out the boundaries of 22 new counties in western Kansas. Kearny County in southwest Kansas, named for General Philip Kearny (1815-1862), was one of these counties. The county was bounded by Wichita, Hamilton, Grant and Sequoyah counties. There was no official county government in the 1870's and in 1879 Kearney County was organized into a municipal township of Ford County. In 1883-1884 the eastern half of Kearney County and Sequoyah County were combined to form Finney County while the western half of Kearney County became part of Hamilton County. In 1886, all of what had been Kearney County was united with the newly organized Hamilton County. On March 27, 1888, Governor John Martin signed a proclamation establishing Kearney County. During the 1889 Kansas Legislative Session Senate Bill 139 was introduced and passed, correcting the spelling of the name to Kearny County.
