Before the nineteenth century, Western Kansas was home to Athapascan speaking peoples commonly called Plains Apaches. The Kiowa Apache called themselves Nadiisha-dena, "Our People" and now are recognized as the Plains Apaches of Oklahoma. Kiowa County was formed in 1886 from Comanche and Edwards Counties. The county seat is Greensburg.
