Breckinridge County was organized about 1858. The county changed its name to Lyon County 05 Feb 1862. Lyon county was named in honor of Nathaniel Lyon, a general who was killed at the Battle of Wilson's Creek, Missouri, during the Civil War. (There were a few boundary changes in the county's early years.)
Emporia is the county seat.
