| Obituary of VERNON VICTOR GEISSLER |
| Vernon Victor Geissler, 80, died July 24,
2000, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence. He was born June 22, 1920, at Medina, N.D., the son of Henry and Julia Geissler of Durham and Hillsboro. He grew up in Durham and attended Durham High School. He earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees in agricultural economics from Kansas State University in Manhattan. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force as a combat pilot in the South Pacific from 1943 to 1946. First Lieutenant Geissler flew a B-25 in the Fifth Air Force, 38th bomb group, and 405th squadron. He was an assistant county agent in Butler County and Lyon County, county agent in Wilson County, president of Midwest College Placement Association, associate director of career planning and placement at Kansas State University, and director of placement at the University of Kansas from 1976 until his retirement in 1988. He was elected president of the Kansas Chapter for Public Administration, was chairman of the Area Federal Recruitment, and served as a college recruitment consultant to the Federal Bureau of Prisons recruitment program. He served on the Board of Governors of the College Placement Council. Mr. Geissler was elected to the national economics honorary, Omicron Delta Epsilon, Gamma Sigma Delta, and Phi Delta Kappa, an honorary education society. He was a consultant to the State Board of Education on its 5-year plan regarding the Federal Amendments Act. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lawrence. He served in the Kaw Valley Personnel Association, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Elks Lodge and Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. Survivors include his wife, Winnifred of Lawrence; stepdaughter, Christina Pederson of Lafayette, Colo.; sisters, Leona Goertz of Wichita and Jane Miller and her husband Duane of Hillsboro. Services were held July 28, 2000, at the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence. A military burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence. The family suggests memorials in his name to the Good Samaritan Fund at Presbyterian Manor in care of the Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. |
