Obituary of IRA WILLIAM TURNER

Ira William Turner, 101, Marion, died Oct. 17, 2000, at Marion Manor.
Born Aug. 22, 1899, in Marion County, he was the son of William and Mary Hett Turner. He grew up in Marion County and attended country school. He began high school but was forced to quit because of illness.
Ira always was a resourceful individual and had many talents. His main occupation through the years was as a meat cutter and buyer. He also had operated a restaurant and was known for raising produce sold in local stores.
Ira was married three times. His first wife, Ruth Williams, died a few months after they were married. He married Helen Oyer on Nov. 11, 1924, at Abilene. She died in 1981. On Feb. 14, 1983, he married Helen Westbrook. She survives.
A member of Eastmoor United Methodist Church, Turner also was active at Marion Senior Center where he enjoyed playing cards and pool. Ira also enjoyed bowling.
Other survivors include a son, Robert of Marion; stepdaughter, Anita Mattix of Augusta; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 21 at Eastmoor United Methodist Church with the Rev. Marilyn Cox officiating.
Vocalists were Steve and Greta Smith with Anita Brookens as organist. Songs included "One Day At A Time" and "Amazing Grace."
Casket bearers were Ed Sandwell, Ivan Lee Timm, Charles Cowan, David Bowers, Ralph Popp, and Richard Johnson.
Interment was in Marion Cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established with Marion Senior Center.
