Morris County was first known as Wise County, organized in 1855, in honor of Henry A. Wise. In 1859, when he presided over the hanging of John Brown at Harpers Ferry, the county name was changed to Morris in honor of Thomas Morris, an opponent of slavery.
Council Grove is the county seat.
