Son Accounts for All of Family Name in Oregon

La Comb, Or. June 4 (to the Editor). I wish to deny through The Oregonian the statement in another newspaper that a George Curry other than myself is a relative of the pioneer territorial governor of Oregon. I understand this claim has been made.

Governor Curry, my father, left no relatives by the name of Curry in Oregon or anywhere else, save his own direct line of sons and their progeny. Of his four sons, Ratlif Boone, who was never married; Norwood Litton, William Lane, and myself, George Law - only myself and brother William Lane Curry survive. All of Governor Curry's grandsons are associated in industrial business in Portland or Salem and have been so for some years and never at anytime been residents elsewhere.

Governor Curry's father Goerge had but one brother, William Curry of Philadelphia, and he had no sons, but at the death of his brother George adopted his brother's son and reared him to young manhood. This son, George Law Curry, came west in 1843 and on to Oregon in 1845, and resided continuously there till his death in 1878. The grandfather of Governor Curry came over to America direct from England, and settled at Homesburg, long a part of Philadelphia, and died there, being buried at Christ church burying ground. His name, was Christopher Curry and he came here without brother, father or uncle so far as our records go.

There was no male issue by name of Curry other than the above mentioned George Curry of Philadelphia. My father'' father commanded in the war of 1812-14 - the commanding officer being sick - the Washington Blues, notably at Bladensburg. His son, destined to become conspicuous figure in the winning of the west, was aged 8 years at his death.
