My name is MaryAlice Schwanke, I am the coordinator for Pottawatomie county.  I do not live in Kansas and am unable to perform research for you, but I hope to update this site to help you find useful tools and information easier to aid in your research, so check back often!

A Brief County History

The Kansas Territory was organized in 1854, Kansas became the 34th U.S. state in 1861. Pottawatomie County was established in 1857 from land formerly part of Riley County, and is named for the Potawatomi tribe. Westmoreland was voted as the county seat in 1882. Pottawatomie County is divided into twenty-three townships.
