Rawlins County Kansas is located in extreme northwest Kansas. Five Germans Lange, Blume, Stermer, Deitheff and Nast first settled here in April 1875. In 1887, John Baude arrived. His son, Karl was the first child born in the county. The town of Atwood was established in 1879 two miles east of the present location. In May 1881, the governor of Kansas issued a proclamation organizing Rawlins County and declaring Atwood a temporary county seat.
