Michael Coons Obituary
M. Coons Passed Away Sunday Morning
Michael Coons was born in Scott county, Indiana, October 6, 1837, passed away
February 24, 1913, at the age of 75 years, 5 months and 19 days.
He was married to Celestine Boyd June 5, 1858. Had he lived until the 5th of
June he would have celebrated his 55th wedding anniversary. To this union were
born 5 children, 3 girls and 2 boys all survive him, except one, Anna Elizabeth,
who died in infancy.
Mrs. Sarah E. Mitchell, Mrs. Bell Newell and William and G. S. Coons, who were
all present at his bedside when the end came. He leaves 13 grandchildren and 6
great-grandchildren. He was a kind husband, a loving father, and was loved and
respected by all who know him.
He resided in Indiana until 18?4 when he emigrated to Beardstown, Ill., and in
18?6 moved to Reno county and for the last eight years had lived in Sylvia.
He was converted in early manhood to the Methodist faith and was a member of the
Methodist church of Austin Indiana, but had never identified himself with any
church while in Kansas but was a great believer in the religion of Jesus Christ.
He was generous and liberal with all churches and the first to help those in
need.
He was a charter member of I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 132, Austin, Indiana, which was
organized in 1870, but he later transferred his membership to the local I.O.O.F.
being a member in good standing at the time of his death.
The funeral service took place February 21 in the Congregational church. The
interment took place in the I.O.O.F. cemetery under the auspices of the order.
A large assemblage of friends and relatives attended these services.
