Sam Hirst, Pioneer Kansas Photographer, Dead At
92
Sam Hirst, 402 East B, a Hutchinson photographer
fro 70 years, died at Grace Hospital Saturday night after a long
illness. He was 92.
Mr. Hirst became a professional photographer when
he was 18 and was active in that field until a few years ago.
His first studio was at 23 North Main. Mr.
Hirsts father, George, earlier had opened the first studio in this area but
quit the business to farm near Partridge. A daughter, Lilah, continued the
business for several years.
Mr. Hirst was born Oct. 1, 1864 at Darlington,
Wisc. The family moved here in 1872 and Mr. Hirst rode the first Santa Fe
engine over the new track between Newton and Hutchinson.
When his health failed two years ago, Mr. Hirst
moved to Wichita to live with a daughter. He had been hospitalized here
since June.
Surviving are the one daughter Mrs. Lilah
Whitney, Wichita; one brother Will, 410 East B; 2 grandchildren and 3
great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Johnsons
Chapel. Rev. James W. McKnight will officiate. Burial will be in Eastside
Cemetery.
