Welcome To Reno County, Kansas

Sebastian Lemle Obituary

Obituary of Sebastian Lemle, Arlington, Reno County, Kansas:   Born: 20 JAN 1854; Died: 13 AUG 1935.  (I am sorry, but I do not know in which newspaper this obituary was printed. The text seems to point that it is from an Arlington, Kansas, newspaper, but I have no proof of that fact.  I received it in 2004 from Sebastian Lemle's grandson, Wayne Lemle, of Colorado Springs, Colorado). Sebastian Lemle is my maternal Great-great Uncle via his sister (my maternal Great-grandmother), Veronika (nee Lemle) Schaal. Sebastian and his sister, Veronika, were two of the seventeen children of Franz Peter and Paulina (nee Weidemann) Lemle, all but one being born in Odenheim, Baden, Germany. Franz Peter & Paulina (nee Weidemann) Lemle arrived in the United States at the Port of New York on 30 NOV 1864 (date taken directly from the photocopy of the ship's manifest of the "Bark Laura"), having sailed from Antwerp, Belgium, on the ship, "Bark Laura" with eleven of the seventeen children born to them.  They stayed several months in Baltimore, Maryland, and then came "west" to farm in Richfield Township, Lucas County, Ohio, in 1865.   I had the privilege of meeting Sebastian Lemle's grandson, Wayne Lemle, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in April, 2002, when my husband and I were at a conference in Colorado Springs, CO.

Located Near Arlington in 1878 and Has Since Lived Here,
Saw All Hardships of Pioneer Life

--------------------

The people of Arlington and community were greatly shocked upon learning of the death of one of the early day settlers of this vicinity, Mr. Sebastian Lemle, Tuesday, August 13.

For some time past, Mr. Lemle had been in poor health, and it was realized that he had but a short time to live.
His long life in this community has been a useful one, and he numbered his friends by all who knew him. Coming to Arlington in the early day, he experienced the hardships of pioneer life.  He made a complete success of his undertakings, and during his declining years, he and Mrs. Lemle have lived in comfort from the fruit of their labors.   Mr. Lemle represented the finest-type of citizen.
Sebastian Lemle was born in Germany January 20, 1854.  Departed this life August 13, 1935, at the age of 81 years, 6 months, and 24 days.  He came to America with his parents in 1865 and lived in Ohio until 1878.  He then came to Kansas and settled near Arlington where he has since made his home.  He was a stone mason by trade and laid the foundations for the first buildings in Arlington.
He was united in marriage to Mrs. Antonia [Submitters note: {Please note that this book, and direct information of the spelling of her first name from her grandson, Wayne Lemle, gives the correct spelling of Mrs. Lemle's FIRST NAME as "ANTONIO."} The book, "Arlington" by J(oseph) A. Fehr (the above-noted Mrs. Lemle's son) gives this information: "Our Mother, Mrs. Antonio Lemle, at the age of twelve years, came from Germany...".  Reference:  "Arlington", Fehr, J.A., The Wichita Eagle Press, Wichita, KS, 1937, p. 74.] Fehr in 1880.  To this union were born three children, Mrs. Lenora Stull of Arlington, Mrs. Frances McSherry of Meade, Kansas, and Albert Lemle of Fowler, Kansas. He also leaves to mourn his going, his widow, Mrs. A. Lemle, two step-sons, J(oseph).A. Fehr of Arlington, and C(Charles) F.(rederick) Fehr of Strasburg, Saskatchewan, Canada, a number of grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and a host of friends. [Submitters note: The book, "Arlington" by J(oseph) A. Fehr (the above-noted step-son) gives this information: "Our sister, August B. (nee Fehr) Finch, died May 25, 1932.  Sebastian Lemle had been her step-father, also.  Reference:  "Arlington", Fehr, J.A., The Wichita Eagle Press, Wichita, KS, 1937, p. 75.]    He was a kind father, a devoted husband, and a well-liked neighbor.  He was a faithful member of the International Bible Students and was always ready to help in forwarding the message of God's Kingdom.
The funeral service was conducted from the home Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, by Mr. J. L. Thayer of Abilene, Kansas.  Interment was in Arlington cemetery.
