GILBERT J. CRIST, late of Salem Township, came to this county in the spring of 1878, and in common with the enterprising men around him commenced tilling the soil on a tract of land from which be built up a good homestead. This is now occupied by his widow, Mrs. Mary C. (Haughey) Crist, a lady who, like her excellent husband, has many friends in this section of country, where they lived and labored together and shared the common interests of a young and struggling community.
Mr. Crist was born in Williams County, Ohio, Feb. 5, 1855, and departed this life at the home of his father in Williams County, April 10, 1887, whither he had gone in hopes of improving his health, having been afflicted with the dread disease cancer. He was the son of Milton B. and Rachel H. (Redfield) Crist, of Williams County, Ohio, where he was reared to manhood and engaged in farming pursuits until the spring of 1878. Then desiring a change of residence, he set his face westward, and making his way to this county prepared to build up a permanent homestead. Mr. Milton B. Crist was born in Seneca County, N. Y., Aug. 10, 1824, and was married, May 2, 1854, to Miss Rachel H. Redfield, who was born in Harrisville, Medina Co., Ohio, March 11, 1832. They settled in Williams County, Ohio, Oct. 15, 1854, shortly after marriage, where they have since continued to reside.
While a resident of his native State the subject of our sketch was united in marriage, on the 16th of June, 1878, with Miss Mary C. Haughey, a daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Cassil) Haughey, of whom a sketch appears elsewhere in this ALBUM. Mrs. Crist was born in Williams County, Ohio, Oct. 7, 1860. They commenced life together in Salem Township, and nine years later Mr. Crist was stricken down in the midst of his plans for the future and his usefulness. He was an upright, reliable citizen, a Republican, and had filled the office of Constable in Salem Township. Mrs. Crist is managing the property left by her husband in a most praiseworthy manner, and enjoys the esteem and affection of a large circle of friends.
Mr. Crist was the eldest of a family of four children. Henry A. was born June 30, 1862, and continues a resident of Williams County, Ohio; William R. was born Feb. 26, 1864, and is farming in Salem Township, this county; Perlia I. was born July 16, 1868, and resides with her parents in Ohio. The latter were among the pioneers of the Buckeye State, and are now living in Williams County, Ohio.
