A. R. HOWE. The business house of this gentleman at Bayneville, where he is carrying on general merchandising, occupies an area of about 60x24 feet, and in which he carries a full stock of the articles required in the country or village household. He established here in the fall of 1884, and does an annual business of about $8,000. He also has charge of the post-office, receiving his appointment as Postmaster in 1886, and officiates as agent for the coal firm of Popkess & Durkee, of Ft. Scott, who carry on an extensive business.
Mr. Howe was born in Oneida County, N. Y., in October, 1841, and when about twelve years of age removed with his father, Ira V. Howe, to LaSalle County, Ill., where he was reared to man's estate. There also he was married, Dec. 25, 1872, to Miss Jennie Dunnovan, who has borne him three children: Mabel A., born July 18, 1875; Rena N., Oct. 30, 1877; and Clarence A., May 6, 1881.+
Our subject in his youth received but a common-school education, and became familiar with farming pursuits. In the fall of 1884 he came to Kansas, and the year following established in his present business, from which he enjoys a comfortable income. He also owns a good farm of 160 acres, on section 4, in Ohio Township, and is one of the self-made men in this region, who by their own exertions have attained to a good position, socially and financially. He votes the straight Republican ticket, and while a resident of Illinois held the various local offices.
