J N. STONE, Street Commissioner of Wichita, is a representative citizen, the owner of considerable real estate in the city, and stands well in the community. He was born on a farm near Springfield, in Sangamon County, Ill., July 7, 1853, and acquired his education in the common schools. He spent his boyhood and youth after the manner of most farmers' sons, becoming familiar with plowing, sowing and reaping, and amid the quiet scenes of country life grew up with a healthy constitution and a clear brain.
Our subject, in 1870, engaged in the agricultural implement business with his father in Wapella, DeWitt Co., Ill., in which they were successful, and where they continued together three years. Then, desirous of crossing the Mississippi, our subject came to Wichita, and once more embarked with his father in business, investing this time his capital in livery stock and feed. They thus continued together until in April, 1885, when our subject was elected to his present office. In the discharge of its duties he has given general satisfaction, being a good business man of sound judgment and correct principles.
John N. Stone, Aug. 17, 1874, was united in marriage with Miss Fanny Sayre, in the city of Bloomington, Ill., who was born March 13, 1850, in New Jersey, and is the daughter of Jeremiah and Mary (Walker)Sayre. The young people commenced housekeeping together at Wichita, and their roof now shelters two bright children: Cosie, born April 30, 1876, and Leota, Aug. 3, 1879. Their pleasant home is located at No. 233 North Fourth avenue, and our subject and his wife enjoy the society and friendship of the best people of their community. Mr. Stone is a stanch Republican, politically, and in all respects has deported himself as an honest man and a good citizen.
The parents of our subject were James R. and Elizabeth Stone, natives of Kentucky, and now residents of Wichita. The household circle included five children - J. V., J. N., Annie E., Lula and Laura B.
