ISAAC S. MATKIN. This gentleman, whose name is familiar as a successful dealer in real L, estate, arrived in Wichita in the spring of 1883 to canvass the prospects and inducements for a permanent location. The result was satisfactory, and the following year after his marriage he took up his residence here and put up the second house on Topeka avenue south of the railroad. This was followed by the building of four more, and he is now fully identified with the interests of this rapidly growing city.
Our subject, who is the brother of Charles A. Matkin, a sketch of whom and the parental history will be found elsewhere in this volume, was born in Greencastle, Ind., in November, 1860. After leaving the common school he entered Asbury University, but before completing the course was obliged to abandon his studies on account of ill-health. After a year spent at the home of his uncle in Indiana in order to recuperate, he returned to his books, becoming a student now of the Commercial College in Indianapolis. Upon leaving this institution he engaged as clerk in a dry-goods store there and was thus occupied for a period of six years.
Mr. Matkin was united in marriage with Miss Mamie, daughter of Bernard and Mariah McClosky, in June, 1884. The young couple a few days afterward commenced housekeeping in the city of Wichita at their own residence on South Topeka avenue, and now number a large circle of friends among the best residents of the city. They are the parents of two children: Leon C., born June 20, 1885, and Frederick T., July 7, 1887. Mr. Matkin has been remarkably successful, and has accumulated a tine property for a young man, his real estate being valued at nearly $50,000. The parents of Mrs. Matkin were natives of New York, and are now living in Indiana. Mrs. M. was born May 23, 1862, in New York City, and was the first of her parents' seven children.
