ROBERT HUTCHISON, one of the wealthy and retired farmers of Sedgwick County, and now a resident of Wichita, came west of the Mississippi in 1881, and making Wichita his objective point, has since continued his residence here. In 1887 he put up a fine brick residence at a cost of over $6,000, and in due time became an extensive property holder. The greater part of his life has been occupied in agricultural pursuits, and his specialty was stock-growing, in which industry he met with more than ordinary success. His present home occupies No. 2,005 North Lawrence avenue, and is noticeable from the indications of both comfort and luxury which illustrate the refined tastes and ample means of the proprietor.

            Our subject was born in Fayette County, in the southwestern corner of Pennsylvania, Sept. 14, 1815, and is the son of Robert and Margaret (Love) Hutchison, who were natives of the same State. The father was a farmer by occupation, and emigrated to Wayne County, Ohio, in 1840. He located in that county, where he carried on agriculture as before, and where he died sixteen years later, in 1856. The mother survived her husband but six years, her death also taking place in Ohio, in 1862. Both parents were members of the Old-School Presbyterian Church. Their sons and daughters are recorded as follows: Hugh died some years ago; Mary, Mrs. Jacob Hiss, is also deceased; James is a resident of his native county in Pennsylvania; John lives on the old homestead there; Robert, of our sketch, was the fourth child; the others were Joseph and William.

            Mr. Hutchison was a young man twenty-two years of age when he left his native State, and removed to Ohio with his father's family. He remained there until coming to Kansas, in 1881. He was married in Wayne County, Ohio, on the 12th of July, 1845, to Miss Catherine Brenizer, who was born in Cumberland County, Pa., Sept. 10, 1825.
