GEORGE F. FLESHMAN, a prominent and energetic young farmer and stock-raiser, residing on section 27, in Salem Township, is a native of Virginia. He first drew the breath of life Nov. 2, 1857, and is a son of William H. and Mary L. (Gish) Fleshman, a sketch of whom appears elsewhere in this ALBUM. In 1869 he came to Kansas with his parents, and has made this State his residence since that time. He received a portion of his education in his native State, which was finished in the district schools of Sedgwick County, after the family located here. He grew to manhood on his father's farm, and at the age of twenty-one was united in marriage, Nov. 20, 1878, with Miss Charity C. Powers. The bride was born in Lewis County, W. Va., Nov. 19, 1854, and is the daughter of William D. and Charity (Paxson) Powers, both of whom were also natives of West Virginia. While Mrs. Fleshman was still a little child her mother died, and left her to a father's care. The latter has been twice married, and is the father of four children, namely: William M., residing in West Virginia; Charity C., the wife of our subject; Paxson L., residing in Salem Township, and Luther B., in California.

            In the spring of 1869 William D. Powers, the father of Mrs. Fleshman, came to Kansas, and settling in Sedgwick, pre-empted a quarter of section 2, in Salem Township. There he remained, engaged in agricultural pursuits, until August, 1879, when he was called hence. As a pioneer of Sedgwick County he was one of its representative men, and was widely and favorably known by all who lived in that portion of the county at that time. He merited and received the esteem and confidence of his neighbors and associates, and in his death the county lost one of her best citizens. He was a member of the Evangelical Church, and of the Masonic fraternity.

            There has been born to Mr. and Mrs. Fleshman a family of three children, viz: William H., deceased; Florence L., who was born Feb. 16, 1881; and James G., Feb. 3, 1885. Our subject has a good farm of eighty acres of land, on which he has made all the improvements himself. These are of a neat and substantial character, and manifest a degree of industry and good management on the part of the proprietor that is commendable. Considerable attention is given by him to the raising of stock, with excellent pecuniary results. He affiliates with the Democratic party in politics, but is not bound entirely by party lines.

            Among the representative homesteads of Sedgwick County, that of Mr. Fleshman, as given by our artist on another page, bears fair comparison, and is a silent illustration of his industry and worth.
