FREDERICK AUGUST ROEMBACH, a retired farmer, and now a resident of Garden Plain, is a native of the little Kingdom of Saxony, and born Jan. 13, 1828. His parents were Joseph and Anna (Guenter) Roembach, who were also of German birth and parentage, and who upon emigrating to America made their way directly to Milwaukee, Wis., where both soon passed away.
Our subject, thus thrown upon his own resources, employed himself at whatever he could find to do, and from 1868 to 1872 was engaged in the hop culture near Kilbourn, Wis. Thence he returned to Milwaukee, and was interested in the livery business until 1877. During this year, desirous of a change of location, he sold out his business in the Cream City, and coming to this county sojourned for a time in Wichita, which was then an unimportant town. He finally settled in Morton Township, purchasing the southeast quarter of section 11, and in due time added to his landed possessions the northeast quarter of section 14. In the fall of 1887 he retired from active labor, and settled down in a snug little home at Garden Plain. The house which he occupies he moved from Cheney, and located on some lots for which he had traded some time previously.
On the 19th of September, 1852, our subject was united in marriage with Miss Wilhelmina Brembach, who emigrated with her parents, Karl Fredrich and Fredrika Christiana Wilhelmina (Lorenz) Brembach, to America in 1848. They, too, made their home in Milwaukee, Wis. Mrs. Roembach is a native of the same country as her husband, and was born May 27, 1832. Of the eight children who came to their household only three survive, namely: George Edward, born May 10, 1856; Clara Fredrika, March 10, 1859; and Richard Leonard, March 18, 1863. The sons are engaged in business at Garden Plain under the firm name of Roembach Bros., carrying a general line of hardware, farm implements, machinery, etc., and are having a prosperous trade, notwithstanding the cry of hard times. In politics the entire family are Republican, and are all members of the Lutheran Church.
