MAYOR WHITELAW DIES  

The funeral services were held over the body of Mayor J.E. Whitelaw at the

Whitelaw home Sunday afternoon at two o' clock, conducted by Rev. L.A.

McCaffree. A very large crowd came out to show their last respects to the

deceased. The house and lawn were crowded.  

Mr. Whitelaw was elected to the office of Mayor of the city of Cheney last

spring, which office he filled with ever untiring energy. During his

illness, his greatest sorrow was that he could not be attending to the city'

s affairs. During his administration many things were done, among which are

the laying of the gutters and the voting of bonds and planning for the new

City Building, which is already in course of construction.  

James Edward Whitelaw departed this life, Friday morning, September 22, 1911

and Interment was made in the Fairview Cemetery, south of Cheney, Sunday

afternoon.  

The deceased was the son of Edward Brown Whitelaw and Theodocia Whitelaw. He

was born in Eaton, Lorain County, Ohio on November 23, 1849, being at the

time of his death nearly 62 years of age.  

He with his parents removed to southern Michigan, Van Buren County, in 1853,

where he grew to manhood.  

In 1875 he was married to Melissa Jane Smith, who shared his life until her

death on November 6th 1897, which occurred south of Garden Plain, Sedgwick C

ounty, the family having come overland to Kansas in the spring of 1877 and

located in Sedgwick County, where he lived until his death. To this union

seven children were born, six of whom are living, one dying in infancy. Five

of the children were present at the funeral services.  

Mr. Whitelaw was again married to Lola E. Brown on July 30, 1902, who

together with the six children, two brothers and three sisters remain to

mourn his departure.  

The deceased was a member of the Christian Church of Cheney and lived a

sincere Christian life. Always active and interested, his going leaves a

vacant place in social, church and city affairs. And that separation is

tempered with the satisfaction that he was prepared and ready to go.
